UPWARD TRAILS --1999

JANUARY 2ND..1999.. Return to the Gorge...hike EAGLE CREEK TO CASCADE LOCKS...6 miles of great scenic Oregon Gorge views and waterfalls. Follow the trail 400 to lunch at Cascade Locks Charburger...and return to the cars full and happy!! Be prepared for any type weather and bring water and snacks.

These goats were constantly 'poop'in and pea'in' so I thought I would give them room and stay back a little. Well that is not the way it worked. Festus took a liking to me and if I got more than ten feet behind, then he stopped, turned his head with a look that said 'what's keeping you, get up here'.

Festus was my friend and wanted to be kissed ( I am not big on kissing goats) and when he was allowed loose in camp he  made a beeline to me and chewed up any plastic bags  I had left out.

We did 13 1/2 miles the first day and these remarkable animals were able to get over most of the six big blow downs we encountered. If they really could not get over them, Carolyn would unpack them, help get the goats over without the packs, and then repack on the other side. Most of the time it was just the big white goat Festus that needed the help. I was amazed, at how the goats could jump and balance on small roots etc.

Our first night camping was a disaster of sorts, but the water was there. It was really a dirty place, in fact it was a turn around for cars, on an old rock hard road. Carolyn discovered  her tent had fallen off one of the goats some where along the trail, so she decided to sleep out. The wind was howling so bad I was having a hard time getting my tarp tent up, and there was no way you could put the stakes in the ground, so I used big rocks, but after one especially huge gust it all came down again for the tenth time, so I slept out also.

JANUARY 23 1999 --- Cross-country ski a 10 mile loop. Government Camp>SnowBunny>Trillium Lake. This is NOT a beginner trip but is a popular distant tour on a trail through the woods ending back in Government Camp. A great time for those with experience.

FEBRUARY 1999

FEBRUARY 6th 1999 --- Cross-country ski trip around little Enid Lake by Government Camp...Always a fun trail following through the woods, down little hills and around corners. This is an advanced-beginners trail of 5-6 miles. You must know how to glide and stop somewhat.

FEBRUARY 13 1999 --- Join Gary and Jim for a moderate rated ski tour an the roads of the very popular Pocket Creek area. 5.4 miles of scenic contryside with a nice long glide. This is an advance beginner tour including the ability to glide slowly as the way out is a slight descent.

FEBRUARY 20 1999 ---Let's change the routine a-bit and go HIKING on the Tom McCall preserve. See if the flowers are out yet! This is a 5-7 mile hike and very nice.

APRIL 3 -1999-- DOUBLE DUTY. Begin with a mountain bike ride on a gravel road following the Deschutes River to the "new" rapids formed by a rock slide several years ago. Join the hikers for additional activites.

APRIL 10-1999.. Cross-country ski the Mud Creek Road stemming off Trillium Lake. If it is a clear day, there will be beautiful views of Mt. Hood. This is an intermediate ski tour in distance and ability (8 Mile Loop). Group meets at Gresham Fred Meyer by the key shop at 9:00 a.m.

APRIL 17 -1999.. Hike over on the "dry" side! Cherry Orchard hike... 6 to 7 miles. Go to the Washington side of the Gorge for this scenic hike.

APRIL 24 -1999.. Cross-country ski to Bennet Pass... Ski what could be the final ski tour depending on snow conditions. Enjoy feeding the birds and "falling on the hill"...you must know how to glide somewhat to be comfortable on this tour.

MAY 8 -1999.. Hiking at its best... Hamilton Mountain up and over. Join Trudy and Karen to fantastic Columbia Gorge views and a very nice waterfall. A bit strenuous but very do-able to the average hiker. Approximately 7 miles .

June 26th.1999.Hike with Jackie on the "Three-cornered Rock Trail"...enjoy the wildflowers present and great great fellowship. Very do-able hike of 4.4 easy miles.

July 3rd..Some trails have obsticles....in this case..about 40' of ladder!! This is a moderate hike under 6 miles......on the "Lava Canyon Trail".......not a frequently used trail this should give us the sounds of the wilderness.

JULY 5th MONDAY.1999...join Karen and hike the "Elowah Falls" trail.....this 3 mile trail shows us beautiful water-falls within 20 minutes of downtown Troutdale. Ice cream at Cascade Locks is certainly in order afterwards.

July 10th.1999.Hike in beautfiul Mt. Hood wilderness on the "Salmon River Trail".....The river should be running full with the late snow melt...showing great small water-falls. Jim will guide you through scenic views.

July 25th--SUNDAY.1999..dust off the spokes.....Parking at the visitors center of Bonneville Dam we will ride across the dam, visiting the locks area....and then on to Cascade Locks..with a detour up the Eagle Creek road to the trailhead...At Cascade Locks we will ride down to the Locks park....circling around to the ice cream shop...and back to our cars along the hike/bike trail we came on.

July 31st.."Mirror Lake" is always a favorite......with options to go to the ridge above the lake.....the lake is a family hike of 1 1/2 miles...with an additional 1 1/2 miles to the top. Mt. Hoods most popular trail!!! Come along.

AUGUST 14th..1999...Re-live the history of the great Oregon Trail.....a three mile round trip hike from the Government Camp area.....to Laurel Hill where the Pioneer wagons were lowered by rope...Enjoy the hike with Karen and her family then explore on your own, Timberline Lodge...Trillium Lake...ride the Alpine Slide....watch the snowboards in downtown Government Camp practice on wooden ramps. Enjoy a day on the mountain.

AUGUST 28th..1999...Put on the PACK...and backpack with Dave and Lynn on the TIMBERLINE TRAIL......camp at Paradise Park......and continue the next day to Ramona Falls. For information on equipment needed please call Dave and Lynn at 668-8950......this beautiful high mountain trail circles Mt. Hood.....this part of the trail is popular and beautiful with views of glaciers, Mt. Jefferson, SkiBowl and the Mt. Hood National Forrest areas.

SUNDAY AUGUST 29th...1999.....HIKE beautiful RAMONA FALLS........and meet the back packers. Ramona Falls is one of the most popular trails in the Mt. Hood forrest with a refreshing falls falling over a rocky hillside. Bring a camera for Mt. Hood views. This hike is long and the middle part climbs some....but the return is all gently downhill and very pretty along a stream. This hike will coincide with picking up and shuttling the backpackers so may interfer with Sunday morning services....we do not often do this....except for shuttle purposes. Please do not skip service to hike. Thank you.

SEPTEMBER 4----5--------6.....1999...Labor Day weekend!!!!!

Saturday.......BEACH TIME........Hike with Jim and Trudy from ECOLA STATE PARK to SEASIDE....This very popular ocean hike takes you high above the breakers.....viewing the light house...and Northern Coastline. 8 miles total on this wide popular trail between Cannon Beach and Seaside.

Sunday......Easy-does-it......across to the Washington side starting up the Hamilton Mt. trail...but stopping at the bridge and RODNEY FALLS and the Pool of the Winds......hiking a total of 3 miles will wet our taste buds for ice cream cones!!!! A short distance into the hike view and touch a petrified stump.

October 16th.1999.Saturday...Up high on Mt Hood's NorthEast side.....hike with Jim and Jackie on the COOPER SPUR TRAIL....a very scenic 7 miles starting high and above the trees within minutes you will be close to glaciers and snowfields.

October 23rd.1999..return to INDIAN HEAVEN on the fantastic THOMAS LAKE TRAIL. 7 easy miles of hiking this popular trail will give you views of a dozen lakes....ending with Aquablue Blue Lake. The fall colors will give rich reds and oranges for photographers paradise.

This is a nice trail in the center of all the mountain activity...yet in the quietness and beauty of the mountain snows. 5-6 miles of beginner trail will be a nice workout and enjoyable day!!!!!

MARCH 25th...2000... Cross-country Ski little TEACUP LAKE. Again, in the Government Camp area this trail is one of the few we do that is not an unplowed road....with its turns and small hills....it is a fun challenge for any skier. About 5 miles in length.

April 1st..2000.....Cross-country ski starting at Government Camp on the WESTLEG TRAIL.and finishing on the TRILLIUM TRAIL......perhaps the most popular cross-country ski trail on Mt. hood. You have to know how to "glide" on this trip and be able to handle a 10 mileloop. Intermediate rating.

April 29th-2000-Let's change the routine a-bit and go HIKING on the Tom McCall preserve. See if the flowers are out yet! This is a two part hike totaling 5.6 miles. This hike has very beautiful views of the Gorge, Mount Adams, and Mount Hood.

Last summer I spent some time 'car camping' and hiking and exploring time. I have several ideas for trips like those this summer where we go set up camp, explore/hike and spend the night with our cars and get up and explore/hike again the next day. (Some might even want to backpack out of the car area for one night and those not wanting to could do a short shuttle).

Areas such as:

-St. Helens

-Ollallie Lake

-John Day River area and trail

-Painted Hills ( I know a great primitive camping area between Antelope and Fossil....and we could catch some of the sights along the way in that loop trip. Old Condon Hotel, Fossil ice cream shop, Shaniko, Antelope)

-Beach (group campsites like Nehalem Bay....hiking to the 'spit' and Nehakanie Mountain)

-Steens (would need more then one night for sure)

-Bonney Meadows (where I camped last fall and 'found' the "Hawk Watch" program where you stand on a high point in the area and watch the birds migrate South along the "hawk highway' and watch the birds being caught and banded and let go. Very intersting. Nasty road into the area however.

-and the Cave areas around Bend
This would not necessarily be 'all the amenities' camping for sure. There would be a trip or two that I would take my tents instead of my RV because of the primitive roads.

Familys would be very welcome obviously as I have six teenagers who love to play kickball, catch, horseshoes etc. in the evenings with others.

We could set up a central kitchen so every one could use the bigger stoves to cook on and keep a pot of water going for drinks. Independent camping but still with the 'group'. Any ideas?? No shopping at the malls now, we ARE a wilderness group!!!!

B-A NEW trip for Upward Trails!! Primitive car camping trip. Travel up the Gorge to Biggs Junction then over to Congdon. Follow down to the Fossil ice cream shop and the towns hillside to hunt for Fossils. Bring a small shovel or large trowel. Continue to a painted hills rest area and then about 4 miles up a dirt, rough road. (No low cars or large rv's). At the camp there will be casual hiking over some painted hills and up a dirt road and/or along the John Day River. There is no drinking water so everyone must bring plenty of water. There is a store in Fossil. Sunday morning we will go up over the hills and drop into Antelope for breakfast, stop at the 'living ghost town' of Shaniko, continue down to the Gorge and home. ONE night 'primitive' camping. Primitive means no cabins, running water, campsites. We just ENJOY the area and the wilderness countryside.

This month,.. of June,...

Is the heavenly view of what scientists call the "alignment of the planets"
Mercury, Venus and Saturn will be tightly grouped and close to the horizon. They will converge in an area of sky smaller than the visual diameter of the moon.

Watch this rare grouping develop as the month progresses.You can now locate brilliant Venus hovering above the horizon to the west-northwest just after 9pm.

Saturn will emerge by 9:30 higher than Venus directly to the west. The ringed planet is keeping company with the twins Castor and Pollux, two stars just to the right of Saturn. By June 15th Mercury will have entered the picture as this innermost planet comes around the sun and approaches Venus.

Find a spot wiht a clear view to the west and use binoculars about 30 minutes after sunset.
All three planets are very bright but so is the sky. As the sky darkens the planets move closer to setting and by 10pm Mercury will be below the horizon.

AND enjoy the boys living on the ranch as they will be helping you lead and enjoy the animals and twirl the ropes.

Leave camping gear in your trunk and hike a 6.6 m. loop through a wildflower meadow then a forest of 17 different species of trees, the highest concentration in Oregon. Bring flower & tree ID book for this one. Then on to an old fire lookout on Iron Mt. with 360o views and over 300 species of wildfowers!! Bring camera and extra layers for possible windy summit. Camp the night, then stop to see several waterfalls on the way home Saturday. NW Forest Pass required.
